House subcommittee OKs $400M in Hawaii military construction spending

The House Armed Services’ Subcommittee on Readiness has approved more than $400 million in military construction in Hawaii for the 2014 fiscal year, U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa said Thursday. The money would be authorized under the National Defense Authorization Act and it includes nearly $237 million for Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay, where there are plans to base more aircraft, including MV-22 Ospreys. OluKai donates footwear designed for Hawaii lifeguards to lifeguard association

The Hawaii-made shoe brand OluKai will donate around $135,000 in footwear to the Hawaii Lifeguard Association at an event planned for Saturday at one if its retailers, Island Sole. The footwear donation is in addition to an annual donation of around $20,000 that OluKai, which has nearly 2,000 retailers in North America, collects from proceeds year-round and gives to the nonprofit Hawaii Lifeguard Association. Boys Scouts vote to end ban on gay members

The National Executive Committee for the Boy Scouts of America voted on Thursday to lift the ban on gay members in the Irving-based organization in a meeting at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine. The organization said that 61 percent of the roughly 1,400 members of the Boy Scouts National Council voted to end the prohibition, effective on Jan. 1, 2014.
